We're very privileged to have Amy Lau from East Asia School of Theology to share with us at this week's PDA (Our weekly fellowship meetings) on the book of Jonah.

Personal Background

a. Jonah, son of Amittai, from Gath Hepher (2 Kings 14:25) which lay about 3 miles north of Galilee, making Jonah an Israelite.

b. A zealous patriot, strongly Jewish (Jonah 1:10)

c. A prophet during the reign of Jeroboam II (Israel, 793-752 B.C.; 2 Kings 14:23-27).

Prior to Amos and Hosea
Gave prophetic message concerning the geographical expansion of northern kingdom, Israel
An unwilling prophet to Nineveh

Nineveh/Assyria

a. Nineveh lay east of the Tigris river. It was part of a city-state complex that formed the capital of Assyria.

b. Assyria was a dominant world power for about three centuries (9th - 6th C B.C.)

The name Assyria came from a city-state named Asshur which lay on the western bank of Asshur (var. Ashur'Assur) was also the name of the sun-god that was prominent in the worship culture of the Assyrians.

c. Northen kingdom Israel fell to the Assyrians in 722B.C.

d. Nineveh fell to the Babylonians in 612 B.C.

The Book Of Jonah

a. Located in the Prophets section, but actually a historical narrative.

b. Contains only about 8 English words of prophecy (5 in Hebrew).

Jonah Outline

1:1-3 God's command & The Runaway Prophet

1:4-16 A conversionary voyage

1:17 The fish's bait

2:1-9 Jonah's Psalm

v 1-7 Reflection of Jonah's drowning and God's salvation
v 8-9 Vow of praise

2:10 The fish's indigestion

Exercise: Jonah Chapter 1

Question:

What did Jonah do in contrast to the LORD's command to go to Nineveh

Answer:

v 3 But Jonah rose up to flee to Tarshish

Q: What was the result of the LORD hurling a strong wind on the sea?

A: v4 and there was a storm on the sea

Q: As the ship was about to break up, what effect did this have on the sailors?

A: v5 Then the sailors became afraid.

Q: What did the sailors do as a result of their fear?

A: v5 and every man cried to his god, and they threw the cargo...into the sea.

Q: What did Jonah do in contrast to the sailors?

A: v5 But Jonah had gone below into the hold of the ship, lain down and fallen sound asleep.

Q: What was the result of Jonah telling the sailors that he worshipped YHWH God of heaven who made the sea and the dry land?

A: v10 Then the men became extremely frightened

Q: What did Jonah say will happen if they threw him into the sea?

A: v12 Then the sea will become calm for you.

Q: Why couldn't the sailors row to the land?

A: v13 for the sea was becoming stormier against them.

Q: What did the sailors do when they realized that they could not ride against the stormy sea?

A: v14 Then they called on the LORD...

Q: What was the response of the sailors as a result of the sea becoming calm after they threw Jonah into the sea?

A: v16 Then the men feared the LORD greatly...

Applicational Thought

What do these two chapters tell me about God?

When we disobey God, people around us would get affected. Do you care if the people around you are not saved, what are you doing about it?
What keeps you from doing what you know is God's will for you to do?
Who is your 'Nineveh'? Are you running away from your 'Nineveh'?
Are you caught in a fish belly situation - helpless, beyond your control?
Are you getting comfortable in being inside the 'fish belly'?
How can a person get out of a fish belly situation?

Basic facts on time management

1. We all waste time

2. We cannot change time

3. Time is the important resource of mankind

4. We cannot do anything to increase our time, just live with it.

5. We can only steward time

6. We can do anything, but we cannot do everything (Have a focused life! Know what's your calling, do that ONE THING God wants you to do.)

7. We all procrastinate

In the olden days, they don't have watches but have time. Today, we have watches but have no time!

Timely Advice About Time:

1. Become time conscious

be aware how you use it. It's the most valuable commodity! Just like money, the best use of time is to invest it.
Parable of Talents (Matthew 25:14-30)
The more conscious you are, you'll find yourself having more time

2. Make a personal time log (Activity: Using post-it notes & A3 paper)

3. Identify & eliminate time wasters

4. Place a value on each activity (activities you can't do without, eg. meals, study, church, QT)

5. Result-oriented vs. activity-oriented

Fold A3 paper into half
Left (Result-oriented), Right (Activity-oriented)

Never measure your success by how busy you are. You can be busy doing nothing.

6. Understand the value of planning

When planning ask:

What needs to be done
By when must it be done
Where to do
Why do it
Who can do it
How to do

7. Stay on your AGENDA (Your agenda and priority is on God)

8. Keep Responsibility where it belongs, schedule your priorities

9. Access your ENERGY & TEMPERAMENT

Are you a morning or night person?
Luke 10:38-42 (At the home of Mary & Martha), take time to sit at the feet of Jesus to sharpen and be equipped
Every week, spend 2-3 hours just to reflect, read his word ... ...
Every month take hours to spend time to listen to the Lord

It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each man's work. If what he has built survives, he will receive his reward. What does it mean by movements everywhere... ... so that every student knows someone who truly follows Jesus?

Movements is like a forest, it starts from a seed.

It's a renewing cycle: more fruit > more seeds > more trees

God wants us to change the world starting from where you are!

Start with YOURSELF!

You can't bring someone else to somewhere you've not been!

Movements is not about doing the great things, it's about PEOPLE.

It's doing the small things that makes a BIG DIFFERENCE.

For every student to know, there MUST be that SOMEONE!

How to be that someone?

1. SOMEONE who truly follows Jesus

2. SOMEONE who is willing to reach his/her campus

3. SOMEONE who will be serious about his/her relationship with God

You spend 5 days on campus. It's where you can be most influenced or you can MAKE THE MOST INFLUENCE!

We can be ineffective & unproductive although we know Jesus vs. Make every effort!

Be active not passive

Vision Casting 2009

A big welcome to all of you freshmen who joined us on Wednesday. I'm sure you all had lots of fun, dressing up as sheep (Pink Arni), the real wacky group games and hearing from God's word, cardboard testimonies and get to know new friends!

Well, this sure ain't the last time we'll gather together as a mnistry. We have PDA (Phileodelphia) every Wednesday from 3-5.30pm. We ain't referring to your mobile or that BGR Public Display of Affection here, gross. haha. It's our weekly fellowship meetings with 2 objectives:

1. To be an authentic community where there is shared vision & encouraged lives

2. To create an environment where God’s Word is desired, studied and taught

We have really awesome programmes lined up for you to dig deep into God's word and get to create an authentic Christian "family" on campus to spur one another in our Faith. So yeah, stay tuned for more PDA updates.

Wanna give special mention to the Recruitment Comm'09 members:

Samantha, Tricia, Silas, Alyssa, Joel, Sean, Rachel, Howard, Samuel P., David, Elizabeth Lew, Jin Ping & Ivin.

And everybody who have helped in one way or another. (:

They have done a tremendous job and put in a lot of effort to plan all three events: Clubcrawl, Vision Tea and Outing just for you and have spent countless meetings over the holidays and many late nights putting everything together. If you do see them, it'll be nice if you could appreciate & thank them. You don't know how tiring it is, yet extremely fulfilling when you see how Faithful God is to see everything through.

Hey crusaders those who helped out for Recruitment prep, be it in big or small ways and not to forget those in the recruitment comm'09 (it's tiring but extremely fulfilling). A BIG THANK YOU to all of you! Thanks for availing time and coming back during the holidays to plan, meet up, and help out. Certainly, no one knows the pains and behind the scenes effort, but all of the effort will not go to vain, because we seek to reach EVERY STUDENT for God's glory!

Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship. Love is an Action Word.

If I didn't say the words, could my friends tell by my actions that I love them?

Do I demonstrate my love even when I don't feel "loving"?

We can decide to love when we see it as an active force rather than merely a feeling.

True love exists when our actions match our words.

But whoever has the world's goods, and sees his brother in need and closes his heart against him, how does the love of God abide in him? Little children, let us not love with word or with tongue, but in deed and truth - 1 John 3:17-18 (NASB)

This coming Thursday & Friday 22 Jan & 23 Jan respectively,

there will be a publicity for CDOP booth outside Macs.

The booth is from 10am to 5am.

For a day, there are 7 slots lasting 1 hour each.
